Mrs. Kochan's Expectations

Expectations:
|
While following the above, this is my policy on the grading in my science class:
Remember, Habits of Work is more about how you are in class and not about mastering the content. We want all students to be citizens of their own learning. By having this as a policy, students are accountable for being prepared, respectful, attending, and participating often in each class. Students will be graded 10 times a quarter to receive their Habits of Work grade. Students, no matter what, should always be pushing themselves to a quality habit of work in every class, because this will ultimately help them prepare for what is expected of them in High School, College, and in their future occupations.
Homework Policy
Homework is very important in my class as it is an opportunity to practice the skills we have learned in class. Homework will then be given mostly every night EXCEPT for Friday. Friday is off in terms of NEW homework, but it is an opportunity for students to revise homework from earlier in the week. I want all students to be able to master the skills in science, so I make Friday's my Homework Revision Days. Students will receive Homework they turned in the prior week. They have the opportunity to revise those homework assignments for higher grades. It is not just about getting a higher grade, but about understanding WHY we got something wrong. The revisions MUST be turned in the following Monday to get any credit back for it.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to either see me or go to the "Missing Work" bin to find the make up work. For a typical day absence, work must be turned in by the next two days. One day is to learn the work or catch up on notes, the second day is for you to complete the work. If it is not turned in after that, then if it is turned in within one more day it is for partial credit. After that, all work goes in as Zero's.
Homework can be excepted only two days late. In those cases, the highest grade possible is an 80%. There is no "A" work, when it is turned in late. All Homework after it is graded can be kept in the Student Portfolios in class to refer back to at any moment. After 3 days the highest grade a homework can receive late is a 60% so it is not going to receive a passing grade. Homework though is crucial to practice skills so even if it is late, it should be completed.
Students do not have the option to wait till the end of the quarter and feel they can turn in all their work then. It is not fair to the students who were responsible for turning in assignments throughout the year. Assignments can always be found on this website for the given week. Also a running sheet is kept on the website as well. Parents and students can both us Power School to find out their students current grades and what specific things are missing. Please see your CREW teacher if you do not know your log in information.
